A normal uterus is about the size of a small pear. A bulky uterus simply means it has grown larger than that.
It is not a disease in itself. It is a sign that something else may be going on.
Common Causes
1. Fibroids non-cancerous growths inside the uterine muscle. Research shows fibroids affect approximately 80% of women at some point. They are most common between ages 30–40 and more prevalent in women who are overweight.
2. Adenomyosis The tissue that lines the uterus grows into the uterine muscle wall instead of staying on the surface. This causes the uterus to thicken and enlarge; symptoms often ease after menopause.
3. Endometriosis Tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, causing inflammation, scarring, and possible enlargement.
4. Hormonal changes Higher estrogen levels during pregnancy, perimenopause, or due to hormonal imbalances can cause the uterus to expand.
5. Uterine cancer Less common, but an enlarged uterus always warrants evaluation to rule this out.
